Wedding Cake

This was a wedding cake that I did for a friend in my ward. At first when the idea of me making her a wedding cake was discussed i figured oh it will probably be something small but i was surprised when she told me she wanted a 5-tier cake! This cake was huge! I had to buy more pans, it took over 80 eggs, 20 lbs of fondant, 30 lbs of buttercream, and the list goes on. I'm sure you get the idea. It was a lot of work and time but it turned out beautiful. It was vanilla bean pound cake with raspberry buttercream.

Birthday Suprise

Well August is a super busy month for us. We have MY birthday, My dad's birthday, My grandpa's birthday, My parents anniversary, And our anniversary. Not to mention I am starting the radiology program which is a 40 hr/week course....pheeeew! Well for my birthday my husband bought me a stand mixer, yay!!! I can now make my own buttercream :) I have also been asked about my pricing a lot so I decided to finally put my pricing here on my blog, its on the side column. I am showcasing all of my cakes for the month of august with a brief story under each of them. hope you enjoy!
This is my paintball 16th Birthday cake. I made this cake in 24 hrs. notice!!! They wanted to combine getting in trouble with the cops and paint-balling so this is what i came up with. It took a little bit of thinking to figure out how to get the paintball splashes but finally figured it out.
So my dad turned the big 50, and of course we had to go all out! I made a 3-tier cake of all the things he loves. The top tier was actually on a motorized turntable so it rotated but of course it stops working right before my dad see's it. I sculpted the jeep out of rice krispies. And it was carrot cake with some cream cheese frosting. Yummy!!!
This cake was really fun! it was a 1st birthday safari cake. I did the zebra stripes but in brown tones. Added some palm trees, polka dots, and some cute little animals!

Baby Shower

This is one of the cutest cakes I have made. i say that only because i LOVED making the baby shoes! so fun! again Youtube was my teacher. This cake is for my best friend katie who is prego with her first little baby! She is so awesome in every way so she needed an awesome cake. Besides that cake we also made a baby diaper cake, also thanks to youtube. They are so fun to make! Anyway The orders keep on coming, hope i can keep up when school starts. chow for now.

Fiasco

Well lets just say I survived! In one week i made three cakes, worked full time, and got sick. Not only were they three cakes but two were for a wedding! they all turned out so fun though! the sand is brown sugar on both cakes. the kids at the wedding kept eating it off the table, hilarious!...until they shoved a seashell in my cake, and put fingerprints on the helmet...then i was furious! all in all they turned out great. Can you tell which flowers are real and fake? if not the lillies are from my garden and rest are gumpaste. As holly (the bride) put it. they are my special "Affey make flowers". i also made a mini version of Travis's base. he's in the band called Carlos Cornia, they are really good check them out!

Bridal Shower

Now this cake is pretty special. I made this cake for one of my best friends bridal showers. There is a cool story about her and her husband. They have been together since the 8th grade! He moved away to college for a year, then went on a mission for 2, and they still ended up together. Now i call that true love. The cool feathers on the cake i made out of wafer paper. There's also edible diamonds on the cake as well. the flowers are from gumpaste

Cake class

So my mom and I finally decided it was time for me to take a cake class. Since i had learned everything from the internet i wanted to make sure i wasn't missing anything. So we took an Advanced Cake Decor class from Orson Gygi. This is the finished product from the class. Although the instructors tips were nice, i definitely felt that the class was a waste of time. Oh well, at least i got a cake out of it! And i think i will stick to my own wa of doing things, i find it works much better.

Jungle Shower

This cake was so much fun! It was for a baby shower. Hot pink and Zebra were the colors. I also made all the characters on top. the babies name is Gracie. I rolled some black fondant out and cut little pieces to apply to the zebra tier. Black fondant is so yummy! it tasted like a tootsie roll. And just like I had predicted they didn't cut the cake. That's what happens when they are too cute to cut! Its kind of funny, Most people think i would hate to watch a cake that i spent so much time on making , get cut. But it is actually the most satisfying thing for me. I want my cakes to look good and taste good too.

Orange Creamsicle Recipe

These cupcakes are delish! And yes you heard right, i am sharing the recipe with you. Its very easy. You get a french vanilla cake mix and substitute the water for orange juice. If desired you can zest some orange peel. I use whipped cream frosting for the finish and some decorative candies to top it off. Try them out, you wont regret these babies.

Smash Cake

This is a smash cake for a 1 yr. Birthday. I made 2 dozen glitter cupcakes to go with them, The bow is made from fondant. There is a art to getting a buttercream cake perfectly smooth. Most people think buttercream is easier, but in fact its not. Butter cream can be heated under fondant smoothing underneath making the cake more formable. But buttercream by itself is actually hard to get perfectly smooth, and after smoothed is very easy to nick. Ok so there you have it. just some wise advice on cakes :)

High Speed

Wow! where has time gone? I have been going, going, going lately! I was accepted into the radiology program, working like crazy, and bakin cakes. But i love every minute of it. Ill be posting my cakes soon....

Gourmet Cupcakes

So lately I have been trying to concoct different recipes for cupcakes. So far I have made Orange Creamcicle, Raspberry Lemonade, and the picture below shows the newest Margarita! They were inspired by a girls night which had a Mexican fiesta theme...i thought it was fitting. So far my Orange Creamcicle has been the rave, But better ones are coming soon :) I also got to use my edible glitter that I ordered from Great Britain. By the way always make sure to see what type of currency pricing they have...I didn't realize the website was in pounds! that was expensive ha ha. If any of you have some great ideas of cupcake flavors email me at aftonlyn@gmail.com and i will try to create them. Thanks a Bunch!

Ward Bake Off

So i think this is my best one yet, as far as smooth fondant goes. Since i make my own fondant it can be very temperamental sometimes. Too much powdered sugar makes it stiff and hard to work with, too little makes it sticky and it cracks. BUT this one was just right. I did a vanilla lemon cake with lemon cream cheese filling, it was yummy!!! I made all of the flowers as well. Let me tell you though, after this cake i was very upset with my children (Buddy & Dotty). First off they ate my gum paste Lillie's that i had made, which is why there are non on the cake. Then i got home to find my pink and red pearl dust all over my carpet (which still hasn't come out). It was all over their paws...they didn't hide the evidence well. They are lucky they are cute! Again Kira did the photography which always turns out wonderful, i don't know what i would do without her. I am booking up with cake requests so i should be posting some shortly. I am also taking my first cake decorating class this month, and i'll let ya know how it goes. By the way....I got 2nd

Birthdays

First off THANK YOU to Kira my sister-in-law for taking these pictures for me, she does amazing work! If any of you need a photographer for weddings, family pictures, graduation pictures, or anything else i highly suggest her. Visit her blog at knbphotography.blogspot.com.
Okay so it's been a while since i have posted more photos but here are some recent Birthday cakes that i did. The First one was for my mother-in-law. She loves gardening and flowers so i designed something elegant. I made all of the flowers too. It was a checkerboard cake on the inside made up of chocolate and vanilla. But of course she wouldn't let anyone cut it so we don't have any pictures of the cool inside. The second one was for my sister-in-law. She really wanted a yellow lancer for her birthday, she has been dreaming about it for the past year. So i decided if she wasn't going to be able to drive one she could eat one! So i sculpted a yellow lancer out of rice crispy treats, and added some finishing touches to make it look more real. The cake was done in her favorite colors and chocolate for the cake. I tried to make it kind of modern funky. It started raining that night so you can see condensation on the cake making it shiny...pretty cool. They were lots of fun to do, but next time i think ill make them out of Styrofoam because they wanted to keep them forever. :)

Nightmare Before Christmas

This is the biggest cake done so far. A friend from work's daughter was turning 16 and wanted a Topsy Turvy Nightmare Before Christmas cake. I had a lot of help from my family and it ended up turning out great.
